What is CoolSculpting?

CoolSculpting® is the number one non-surgical fat reduction treatment that contours your body safely and effectively, all with little or no downtime. CoolSculpting® is FDA-cleared for the treatment of visible fat bulges in the submental (under the chin) and submandibular (under the jawline) areas, thigh, abdomen, and flank. It can also treat bra fat, back fat, underneath the buttocks, upper arm, and lax tissues in the submental area. Clinical trials have demonstrated CoolSculpting® in Lackawanna County to be safe and effective in reducing fat in all of these areas.

The number of treatments you need depends on the areas you want to be treated and the desired results you want to achieve. Many patients choose to do CoolSculpting® on multiple areas of the body to reach their ideal outcome.

How Do CoolSculpting® Treatments in NEPA Work?

Each CoolSculpting® treatment is different, so your treatment will vary based on the areas of the body you want to be treated, and how many you plan on doing. Depending on the location, the procedure can be done in as little as 35 minutes. If you plan on multiple treatments in one session, expect to spend more time in the office.

During your CoolSculpting® treatment, the applicator will be placed on the treatment area, and you will experience a slight sucking sensation as it adheres to your body. The signature cooling effect will follow this sensation. While undergoing CoolSculpting® treatment near Scranton, PA, you may experience sensations of pulling, tugging, mild pinching, intense cold, tingling, stinging, aching, or cramping at the treatment site. These sensations will subside in 5-10 minutes after the area becomes numb.

Following the procedure, you may experience the following temporary side effects:

  • Redness
  • Swelling
  • Blanching
  • Bruising
  • Firmness
  • Tingling
  • Stinging
  • Tenderness
  • Cramping
  • Aching
  • Itching
  • Skin Sensitivity
  • Throat Fullness

After the applicator is detached, Dr. Bruno will do a brief massage on the area to break up the treated fat cells and enhance the fat reduction process. Then, you will be free to go!

Final results may take 6 months or more.

CoolSculpting® uses cryolipolysis, which is the technical way to say “fat-freezing.” When fat cells freeze, they die and are then naturally eliminated from your body. This process happens gradually, and you should not notice a difference in your day-to-day life.

Frequently Asked Questions About CoolSculpting®

1. What is CoolSculpting®, and how does it work?

CoolSculpting® is a non-invasive fat reduction treatment that uses controlled cooling technology to target and eliminate stubborn fat cells. This procedure, also known as cryolipolysis, involves the application of a device that delivers precise cooling to the targeted fat areas, such as the abdomen, flanks, thighs, and under the chin. The cold temperature causes the fat cells to crystallize and eventually die without damaging the surrounding skin or tissues. Over time, the body naturally processes and eliminates these dead fat cells, resulting in a reduction of fat in the treated area. The procedure is FDA-cleared and is designed for individuals who have pockets of fat that are resistant to diet and exercise. Results from CoolSculpting® can be seen as early as three weeks after treatment, with the most dramatic results appearing after two to three months.

2. What can I expect during a CoolSculpting® treatment session?

During a CoolSculpting® treatment session, you can expect a comfortable and relatively quick procedure. The session begins with a consultation where your provider will assess the areas you want to target and develop a personalized treatment plan. Once the treatment begins, a gel pad and applicator are applied to the targeted area. The applicator delivers controlled cooling to the fat cells. You might feel intense cold, tingling, or a pulling sensation at first, but these sensations usually subside as the area becomes numb. The procedure typically takes about 35 to 60 minutes per treatment area, depending on the size and location. Many patients read, work on their laptops, or even nap during the session. After the applicator is removed, the treated area may be massaged for a few minutes to help break down the fat cells. There is no downtime, and you can usually return to your normal activities immediately after the treatment.

3. How long does it take to see results from CoolSculpting®, and how long do they last?

Results from CoolSculpting® are not immediate, as the body needs time to process and eliminate the dead fat cells. Most patients begin to see changes as early as three weeks after treatment, with the most noticeable results occurring after two to three months. The body will continue to flush out fat cells for up to six months following the procedure. The longevity of CoolSculpting® results depends on maintaining a healthy lifestyle, including a balanced diet and regular exercise. The fat cells that are eliminated during the treatment are permanently gone and will not return. However, it is important to note that CoolSculpting® does not prevent new fat cells from forming if you gain weight. To sustain your results, it is crucial to continue healthy habits and maintain a stable weight. Periodic follow-up treatments may be recommended to help achieve and maintain your desired outcome.

4. Are there any side effects or risks associated with CoolSculpting®?

CoolSculpting® is generally considered safe and well-tolerated, with minimal risks and side effects. Common side effects include temporary redness, swelling, bruising, firmness, tingling, stinging, or numbness in the treated area. These effects are typically mild and resolve on their own within a few days to a few weeks. Some patients may experience a feeling of fullness in the throat if the treatment was applied to the neck or chin area. Rarely, CoolSculpting® can cause paradoxical adipose hyperplasia (PAH), a condition where the treated fat cells increase in size rather than decrease. This condition is more common in men and may require additional treatments or surgical intervention to correct. To minimize risks, it is important to have CoolSculpting® performed by a trained and experienced provider who follows proper protocols. During your consultation, discuss any medical conditions, allergies, or previous reactions to similar treatments with your provider.

5. Who is a good candidate for CoolSculpting®?

A good candidate for CoolSculpting® is someone who is near their ideal body weight but has localized areas of stubborn fat that are resistant to diet and exercise. Ideal candidates are those who are looking for a non-surgical, non-invasive way to reduce fat in specific areas such as the abdomen, flanks, thighs, upper arms, bra fat, back fat, and under the chin. It is important to have realistic expectations about the results, as CoolSculpting® is not a weight-loss solution and is not intended for individuals with significant overweight or obesity. People with certain medical conditions, such as cryoglobulinemia, cold agglutinin disease, or paroxysmal cold hemoglobinuria, should not undergo CoolSculpting®. During your consultation, your provider will assess your health history, treatment goals, and the areas of concern to determine if CoolSculpting® is the right option for you. They will also create a customized treatment plan tailored to your specific needs.

6. How should I prepare for a CoolSculpting® session?

Preparing for a CoolSculpting® session is relatively simple and involves a few basic steps to ensure a smooth and effective treatment. Before your appointment, it is advisable to avoid taking anti-inflammatory medications such as ibuprofen or aspirin for at least a week, as these can increase the risk of bruising. Stay hydrated and eat a light meal or snack before your session. Wear comfortable clothing, as you will be lying down for the duration of the treatment. If you are treating an area where you have loose clothing, it may be more comfortable. During your consultation, inform your provider of any medical conditions, allergies, or medications you are taking. Following these steps can help ensure a comfortable experience and optimal results. After the treatment, follow any post-care instructions provided by your practitioner to help minimize side effects and enhance the effectiveness of the procedure.
